Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, has been missing since January 16th, when he fled a police and military raid on his home. In a statement on X, Wine confirmed his escape, saying, "I know these criminals are after me, but I'm doing my best to stay safe."
The official election results, which Wine disputes, show President Yoweri Museveni as the winner, extending his decades-long rule. While in hiding, Wine has engaged in a war of words with Kainerugaba, who is also the military chief of Uganda.
Most Ugandans, especially the urban youth, have connected with Wine, as they have not experienced a presidency other than Museveni's. After the election, Wine alleged widespread fraud and called for protests, which led to attacks on his supporters and officials of the National Unity Platform, the party he leads.

In a recent post, Wine directly challenged Kainerugaba, writing, "I'm a rebel without a gun, hiding in plain sight, yet you can't find me because I'm protected by the people. Catch me if you can!"
Kainerugaba, known for his provocative social media presence, has taken offense to Wine's statements. Observers suspect that Museveni is grooming him as his successor, which the president denies. Kainerugaba has made threatening posts, declaring Wine wanted "dead or alive" and even threatening to castrate or kill him. He has also denied that soldiers assaulted Wine's wife during the raid.
Kainerugaba's posts have taken a diplomatic turn, accusing US embassy officials in Kampala of helping Wine go into hiding. He declared that the armed forces had suspended cooperation with the embassy. However, he later apologized, saying he had been given incorrect information.
The Uganda People's Defence Forces have denied pursuing Wine, with Col Chris Magezi stating, "We are not interested in this drama as we have more important matters to attend to."
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja and Information Minister Chris Baryomunsi have also stated that Wine is not wanted by the state.
Kalyegira warns that Kainerugaba's threats should not be taken lightly, as he has a history of translating his words into actions. Robert Amsterdam, Wine's lawyer, has called on the UN, foreign governments, and international human rights mechanisms to take these threats seriously and demand immediate guarantees for Wine's safety.
