A Disturbing Act of Vilification: Jewish Leaders Condemn Graffiti Attack on Andrew Hastie's Office
The Jewish community has spoken out against a deeply concerning incident, as a derogatory slur was spray-painted on the office of Federal MP Andrew Hastie in Western Australia. This act of vandalism came to light after Hastie, a former frontbencher, publicly defended new laws targeting hate groups on social media.
The graffiti, which included the words 'traitor goy', was discovered by staff at Hastie's Mandurah office on Friday morning. The term 'goy' has been used in recent years as a derogatory term for non-Jewish individuals who are overly supportive of Jewish people, according to Perth Hebrew Congregation chief rabbi Daniel Lieberman.
Hastie's stance on the hate speech laws, which were introduced in response to the Bondi terror attack, sparked a heated online reaction. While he initially opposed the laws, he later voted for an amended version, facing backlash from followers who called him a 'sell-out'.
Jewish Australian and Federal Liberal MP Julian Leeser strongly condemned the graffiti, describing it as 'disgusting'. He emphasized that Hastie's actions were in line with the broader Australian sentiment against hate preachers and radical Islamists. Leeser highlighted the incident as a clear targeting of Hastie for his support of Jewish Australians and the community's interests.
Rabbi Lieberman further emphasized the issue of vilification, suggesting that the graffiti was an attempt to imply that Hastie is under Jewish influence or controlled by the Jewish community in his legislative decisions. He expressed concern over the normalization of such abusive behavior, stating that it reflects a broader societal issue where individuals feel entitled to abuse those with differing opinions.
Mandurah Police were promptly notified, and the Western Australian Police confirmed ongoing inquiries, urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by public figures in navigating sensitive political issues and the potential for violent reactions.
