The Morecambe railway signal box has been given a new lease of life as an educational hub, offering a unique learning experience for local schoolchildren. This innovative project, funded by Network Rail, Avanti, TransPennine Express, and Northern, has transformed a once-disused signal box into a vibrant classroom, providing an immersive environment for STEM education.
The signal box, a London Midland Type 15, was built in 1968 and served its purpose until 2013 when its signalling equipment was removed and control of the line was transferred. Instead of being demolished, it has been repurposed, becoming a valuable resource for the community.
One of the key features of this project is the live train movement display, allowing students to follow the latest train schedules in real-time. This not only enhances their understanding of railway operations but also fosters an appreciation for the intricate logistics behind the scenes. Moreover, the location on The Shore road, adjacent to the West Coast Main Line, offers a unique opportunity to discuss rail safety, a critical aspect of railway operations.
Alison Dodd, headteacher of Heysham St Peter's Church of England Primary School, praised the initiative, stating that it brings classroom learning to life in a stunning setting.
