A significant number of households in Wolverhampton have decided to cancel their garden waste collection service, with over 2,500 households opting out after the council's decision to increase fees by a whopping 37.5%. This move has sparked controversy and raised questions about the future of this service.
Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, who oversees waste services, revealed these figures during a council meeting, highlighting the impact of the fee increase. However, he also emphasized that a substantial number of residents, approximately 21,471, have chosen to continue with the service, indicating a potential shift in perspective.
But here's the intriguing part: Councillor Gakhal explained that this is a common trend, with subscriptions typically experiencing a drop at the start of the year, only to see an increase in the following months. He believes that many of the 2,500 households who canceled will eventually return, suggesting a potential change of heart.
The fee increase, from £40 to £55 per year, has been justified by the council as a necessary step towards full-cost recovery for non-statutory services. Councillor Gakhal stated, "This will help us make savings to protect essential services." He further added that residents who don't use the service effectively subsidize it if the council doesn't recover its costs.
Based on these figures, the fee increase is expected to generate an additional revenue of over £222,000 annually. Councillor Gakhal also suggested that residents could share bins with neighbors, with only one resident being charged and the collection taking place from that property.
Additionally, residents have the option to dispose of their garden waste for free at the city's household waste recycling centers located at Anchor Lane and Shaw Road.
This decision by the council has undoubtedly sparked debate among residents. What are your thoughts on the matter? Do you think the fee increase is justified, or is it a step too far? Share your opinions in the comments below and let's discuss this controversial topic further!
